2008 Primary Endorsements

Independent Texans, with over a 65% margin, voted to support Senator Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and Congressman Ron Paul in the Republican primary. (And, please note in our release below, just a few hot primary races in which we've endorsed).

I will be speaking at a press conference tomorrow in Dallas about our support for Senator Obama. If you would like to attend, please call us at 512-657-2089. Thanks! Linda Curtis, Independent Texans

For Immediate Release February 25, 2008

Independent Texans Endorses Senator Barack Obama in the Democratic Primary and Congressman Ron Paul in the Republican Primary

Independent Texans is the only voter association in Texas seeking recognition and political rights for the state's booming independent and unaffiliated voters, representing approximately 5 million Texans. Independent Texans endorsed Senator Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and Congressman Ron Paul in the Republican primary today, after polling it's members througout the state.

Linda Curtis, a founder of Independent Texans and thirty year veteran of the independent movement said, "This is the first time we have endorsed in a major party primary for the Presidency since we founded the organization in 2001. Why are we doing this now? Because, clearly independent voters who loom so very large in Texas, could help decide the outcome of the primary, and potentially the Democratic nomination in this extraordinary campaign for the Presidency. We couldn't sit this one out and we are so very glad we have the opportunity to support as fine a candidate as Barack Obama. For those members who will be voting in the Republican primary, we are also very proud to endorse Congressman Ron Paul. Ron Paul has, for many years, been a close friend of the independent movement carrying key legislation to open up the Presidential debates and for fair ballot access to independent and third party candidates. Dr. Paul has also been a strong opponent of the Trans-Texas Corridor, a project to which Texans of all persuasions are deeply opposed. We also endorse Congressman Paul in his bid for reelection to his Congressional seat in District 14."

Independent Texans announced endorsements in a few key hotly contested Texas House primary races in House District race in Austin, San Antonio, Stephenville and Houston. The candidates agreed to support a call for a Congressional investigation in to Gov. Rick Perry's push for the Trans-Texas Corridor and the right of Texans to statewide initiative and referendum. Those endorsements are:

Brian Thompson, House District 46 candidate running against incumbent Rep. Dawnna Dukes in the Democratic primary.

Ernie Casbeer, House District 59 candidate running in a contested Democratic primary to face Republican incumbent Sid Miller in November.

Tony Kosub, House District 122 candidate running against incumbent Rep. Frank Corte in the Republican primary.

Elias de la Garza, House District 145 Democratic candidate for the open seat vacated by Rep. Rick Noriega.

Bring these resolutions with you to your precinct conventions:

Initiative for Texas Resolution

Calling for a Federal Investigation in to the Trans-Texas Corridor

Whereas, the Governor claims that Texans voted for the Trans-Texas Corridor, when it was never placed on the ballot.

Whereas, the Governor allowed TxDOT to hold hearings, without due public notice, in 2003 where Texans could have lodged their opposition to the project, had they known about such "public hearings", and

Whereas, there was a deceptive lobbying effort, run out of the Governor's office, which led to the passage of a transportation omnibus bill (HB 3588) in 2003, implementing the Corridor, and

Whereas, the Texas Transportation Commission appointees have facilitiated the shifting billions in highway dollars to intimidate county and state officials who have questioned these projects, and

Whereas, an illegal lobbying effort by TxDOT of the federal government has taken place to allow federal highways to be converted to toll roads, and

Whereas, TxDOT has been allowed to misuse public funds for the purpose of "selling" these projects to the public, and

Whereas, the TxDOT and the Governor have withheld public documents -- specifically, a signed contract with CINTRA, a Spanish-based toll road consortium, which appears to have favored status to build the Corridor, and

Whereas, CINTRA lobbyist, Dan Shelley, was employed with the Governor's office to help craft transportation legislation, and then returned to CINTRA's employment, and

Whereas, Federal Highway Administration appointees with ties to CINTRA, have attempted to interfere with the passage of reform legislation by the Texas legislature, and

Whereas, state and federal officials have failed to state the key purpose of the TTC - that it is primarily a trade route to move more imports (primarily Chinese) from Mexican ports in to the US, and

Whereas, the state has failed to address the very real threat of this project to homeland security and the sovereignty of the United States.

Therefore, we call for a Congressional investigation in to these matters as soon as possible.
