Yes, it’s true that the first independent elected in 60 years to the Texas House, Laura Thompson, was elected last week in House District 120, formerly held by Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon! We mentioned this historic race a few months ago. Thompson is said to just be holding the seat until January, as if this is a ceremonial position only. Folks, we’re in the “interim session”. Thompson can get involved in the legislative goings on that affects her district – and we know her well enough to know that she surely will.
The Secretary of State says Thompson didn’t get the signatures she needs to be placed on the November ballot to compete against the Democratic nominee, Barbara Hawkins. If that’s true, it’s really too bad. Just know that the state of Texas continues to lock out independents with arcane and arduous petition requirements when they could easily charge a filing fee like they do major party candidates. More on this issue soon.
